Crowns

Sometimes a tooth is too damaged or eroded to be reconstructed using fillings. If this is the case, fitting a crown is often a good option.

A crown fits over your tooth, making it stronger and giving it the look of a natural tooth. Crowns are used to rebuild teeth that are broken, weakened by decay or have a very large filling. They may also be used to protect teeth that have root fillings, to hold a bridge or denture in place or used to improve the appearance of teeth.

It should only take two visits to have a permanent crown prepared and fitted. In your first visit, your tooth is shaped and prepared so it will form a strong base for the crown. An impression is then taken to make the final crown and a temporary crown is put in place, so you won’t be left with a gap in your teeth while we construct the final crown from the impression. This work is done by a dental technician who takes care to ensure an excellent fit.

When you return to the practice for your final visit the permanent crown is fixed and the fit, shape, colour and bite are all checked.
